Is there any profession that brings out peoples fear more than the dentist? There is a reason “Little Shop of Horrors” casts a dentist as the main villain (Steve Martin is excellent in the movie, btw).
These fears can be brought on by different issues ranging from childhood experiences, to a lack of control while sitting in the dentists chair. Whatever the issue might be, here are some tips to help you overcome your fears and help your smile become the brightest it can be.

These are very good points of advice. Dental fear is a very real thing for many people, for many reasons. I’m not convinced that society doesn’t interfere too much telling people they should be afraid of the dentist. I just wanted to point out that nearly all dentists are aware of these fears, and many of set up their offices to ease the pain. Relaxing offices, headphones, and TVs are standard practice in my office. Like us, many places also offer Sedation Dentistry for patients who need extra help keeping calm.

It seems like there’s been a lot of advancement in dental equipment, technology, and techniques that probably prevent pain & suffering.
Being put to sleep is one of my worse nightmares. Which is why I’m looking into sedation dentistry. You mention getting additional medication to help yourself relax. Do you know if the dentist offers to do that for you?
Thanks for your question, Jessie. Getting put under for any sort of medical procedure worries a lot of people. Talk to your dentist about alternatives to sedation. Ask if there are any drugs that could be prescribe that would help to relax you before your procedure.
You have a good point about the mass fear about dentists. Whenever anyone has a dentist appointment they do not look forward to it. Your point about finding a dentist you trust should help immensely with that fear. I feel if you trust and know your dentist you’ll feel more comfortable. I need to get a cavity fixed but I’m having trouble finding a dentist I feel comfortable with. I was one of those kids that would scream and cry when they had to go to the dentists. I’m still the same person.

Your tip about explaining your fears about visiting the dentist is really helpful to me because my husband and I have been trying to get our daughter to the dentist. I love the dentist so much! I used to be scared but then they have helped my smile out so much that it doesn’t bother me anymore. I have always had straight teeth but they’ve never been that white. I like and trust my dentist so much now that I think I’m going to go in to get them whitened.
Dentists can sometimes seem a little scary because you don’t know what they’re doing and it feels really uncomfortable. But I love going because my teeth always feel so much better after my visits! I think if we’re excited about going, then our kids will learn to like it instead of be scared of it.
